International Football: Five future stars of European football

21 September 2022 06:27:47 EST
England's U19 stars won the Euros on Friday

England clinched glory at the European Under-19 Championship on Friday as they beat Israel 3-1 after extra time in Slovakia.

It was another successful tournament at youth level for England, as they were crowned European champions for the second time in five years, with a number of Ian Foster's side catching the eye.

While this summer's World Cup in Qatar - a tournament England are priced at 8.00 to win - will come too early for this squad, some are surely destined for bright futures on the senior international stage.

We have taken a look at five of the star performers from the Euros, not only from the England squad but from the tournament as a whole.

Carney Chukwuemeka - England

Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka was always expected to be one of England's main men at the finals after featuring 14 times for his club at senior level during the 2021/22 season.

The 18-year-old certainly lived up to those expectations, as he finished as the Young Lions' top-scorer at the tournament, netting three times, including a crucial extra-time strike in the final against Israel.

Chukwuemeka is a player with a big future and Villa will be keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 12 months time and clubs such as Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund said to be interested.

Loum Tchaouna - France

France winger Loum Tchaouna finished as the top-scorer in Slovakia, netting four goals across as many matches as Les Bleuets made it through to the semi-finals before being surprisingly edged out by beaten finalists Israel.

That tally included an impressive brace in France's 4-1 victory over Italy during the group stage and Tchaouna's performances have reportedly now come to the attention of Manchester City.

The Chad-born player is currently on the books of Rennes and he featured 14 times for the French club last season - a breakthrough campaign in Ligue 1 next term is certainly not out of the question.

Oscar Gluh - Israel

Having qualified for the Euro finals for just the second time at under-19 level, Israel enjoyed a tournament to remember in Slovakia, with their run to the final being spearheaded by attacking midfielder Oscar Gluh.

Gluh is a technician of the highest quality - he had England right-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy tied up in knots during the final - while he finished the tournament as Israel's leading scorer with three goals.

Still only 18, Gluh broke onto the scene with Maccabi Tel Aviv during the second-half of last season, scoring three goals in 11 appearances - and a move to one of Europe's top-five leagues may be just around the corner.

Callum Doyle - England

Defender Callum Doyle already has plenty of first-team experience under his belt after featuring 39 times in League One last season for Sunderland during a productive loan spell from Manchester City.

After helping the Black Cats to promotion, Doyle then stepped up as a central figure for England at the Euros, helping the Young Lions to three clean sheets in five matches.

Doyle also scored the equalising goal for England in the final against Israel.

A ball-playing centre back, Doyle is highly rated at City and a loan move to the Championship could be the next step in his blossoming career.

Harvey Vale - England

Chelsea midfielder Harvey Vale captained England to Euro glory, with the Chelsea youngster playing a key role, as his exquisite cross set up Chukwuemeka's crucial goal during the final.

Vale has followed in the footsteps of club team-mate Mason Mount, who was part of the England Under-19 team that tasted European glory in 2017.

The talented 18-year-old was a regular for Chelsea's Under-23s last season and he also featured five times for Thomas Tuchel's senior side.
