Scottish Premiership - Football: Weekend preview

16 September 2022 08:16:56 EST

A full card of Scottish Premiership action returns this weekend, as sides up and down the country jostle for position ahead of the upcoming international break.

Rangers will be hoping for a return to winning ways against basement-dwellers Dundee United after conceding 13 goals in their last three matches, with Hibs vs Aberdeen another eye-catching fixture on Saturday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, David Martindale’s Livingston will be aiming to elevate themselves into the top six with a home fixture against Kilmarnock, and St Johnstone and Ross County will be hoping to steer clear of the foot of the table when they face off in Perth.

On Sunday, champions Celtic travel to Paisley to face St Mirren in search of another victory to continue their perfect record on league duty so far, before an intriguing showdown between Motherwell and Hearts who are currently joint on points in the top half of the table.

Hibernian vs Aberdeen

What

Hibernian vs Aberdeen, Scottish Premiership

Where

Easter Road, Edinburgh

When

15:00, Saturday 17th September 2022

Odds

Hibernian 2.25, Aberdeen, 3.30, Draw 3.30

Two sides who experienced much upheaval in the summer following disappointing campaigns last year, it is the Dons who have started this season in better form.

Sat in 3rd place with 10 points from their opening six matches, Jim Goodwin’s charges will head to the capital with confidence, with summer recruits such as Bojan Miovski, Leighton Clarkson and new skipper Anthony Stewart providing the team with a new lease of life.

Having said this, Hibs are only two points behind Aberdeen in the table despite sitting in eight-place, with the opportunity to go above them with a victory at Easter Road. The Hibees are 2.25 to do so.

This makes for an intriguing battle between two clubs who will be striving for European qualification this year, with Saturday’s meeting an opportunity to really lay down a marker and send a signal to the rest of the league.

Livingston vs Kilmarnock

What

Livingston vs Kilmarnock, Scottish Premiership

Where

Tony Macaroni Arena, Livingston

When

15:00, Saturday 17th September 2022

Odds

Livingston 2.05, Kilmarnock 3.80, Draw 3.25

After an impressive 1-0 victory over Hearts last time out in the Scottish Premiership, Livingston could enter the top half with a win over lowly Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Killie will likely prove a tough nut to crack, however, with Derek McInnes’ men enjoying a slight resurgence in form in recent times. The Ayrshire side have been able to secure a much-needed first league win against Motherwell and a confidence-boosting triumph over Hearts in the League Cup in two of their last three outings in all competitions.

Despite Kilmarnock’s upturn in results, it is hard to back against a Livingston side who are typically a formidable outfit at home in the Scottish Premiership. The Lions have lost just twice in their last 11 league matches at the Tony Macaroni Arena, both of which were against the Old Firm.

You can back a home win for Livingston at 2.05.

Rangers vs Dundee United

What

Rangers vs Dundee United, Scottish Premiership

Where

Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow

When

15:00, Saturday 17th September 2022

Odds

Rangers 1.14, Dundee Utd 17.00, Draw 8.00

Two sides who are likely to be feeling rather down in the dumps at the moment will meet at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon. Home side Rangers will be itching for a morale-boosting victory after three consecutive comprehensive beatings at the hands of bitter rivals Celtic, Ajax and Napoli.

Managerless visitors Dundee United are rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table ahead of a daunting trip to Ibrox, but have picked up two commendable results under the stewardship of interim boss Liam Fox – a 2-1 away win in the League Cup against Livingston and a gutsy 0-0 draw in the league away at Motherwell.

If you fancy Rangers to bounce back in style following their recent malaise and win by three or more goals, you can get odds of 2.05.

St Johnstone vs Ross County

What

St Johnstone vs Ross County, Scottish Premiership

Where

Global Energy Stadium, Dingwall

When

15:00, Saturday 17th September 2022

Odds

St Johnstone 2.45, Ross County 3.20, Draw 3.00

St Johnstone host Ross County following their best performance and result of the season so far – a 3-0 triumph over St Mirren.

Some time has passed since then, though, with Saints boss Callum Davidson perhaps frustrated by the inability to garner a stronger sense of momentum heading into this Saturday’s clash with Ross County.

Separated by just one place and two points in the table, it is a game of real importance for both sides if they wish to climb away from the lower branches of the table.

With just one win from their opening six matches, a trip to McDiarmid Park is a presentable opportunity for Ross County to get their season going after finishing in the top six last year.

Indeed, County were undefeated against this Saturday’s opponents in the last campaign, including a 2-1 away win. You can back them to secure victory against St Johnstone again this weekend at odds of 3.20.

St Mirren vs Celtic

What

St Mirren vs Celtic, Scottish Premiership

Where

The SMiSA Stadium, Paisley

When

12:00, Sunday 18th September 2022

Odds

St Mirren 12.00, Celtic 1.25, Draw 6.00

Fresh from a creditable and yet frustrating draw away in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic face the short trip to face mid-table St Mirren on Sunday.

Although the Buddies have steadied the ship with three victories from their last four Scottish Premiership matches after beginning the season with two consecutive defeats, it will be a tough task to tame a Celtic side brimming with confidence.

The Celts have struck a devastating 25 goals in their six league matches, and you can bet on them continuing in a similar vein against St Mirren by backing them to win by three or more goals at odds of 2.62.

Motherwell vs Hearts

What

Motherwell vs Hearts, Scottish Premiership

Where

Fir Park, Motherwell

When

15:00, Sunday 18th September 2022

Odds

Motherwell 2.55, Hearts 2.62, Draw 3.40

The final game of the weekend, Hearts travel to Motherwell on a high following a 2-0 away win in Latvia against RFS in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

Sat joint on 10 points in the table, Sunday’s contest is a big one in the top half of the Scottish Premiership.

The Well will be hoping Hearts suffer from a European hangover at the weekend, and did beat Sunday’s on two occasions at Fir Park last year.

If you believe Motherwell will have Hearts’ number at home again this season, their odds to win are 2.55
