NCCAF - US Sports: Day set for Buckeyes reward

23 May 2022 03:06:13 EST
Coach Ryan Day is set for a new deal with the Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State are set to give Ryan Day a pay rise that will make the Buckeyes head coach one of the best remunerated in the country.

The Buckeyes, 4.50 to win the NCAAF Championship, went 11-2 last season but didn't reach the Big Ten Championship game for the first time since 2016, after missing out via a tiebreaker to Michigan State.

Day delivers for Buckeyes

After taking over from Urban Meyer in 2019, Day has delivered success during his time in Columbus guiding Ohio State to the College Football Playoffs in his first two seasons and avenging their Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson of 2019 a year later in the Sugar Bowl.

Alongside his overall record of 34-4, the 43-year-old has consecutive Big Ten championships, a Big Ten Coach of the Year honour and an appearance in the national championship to show from three years at the helm.

The two-year contract extension, pending board approval on Thursday, will keep Day him at Ohio Stadium through 2028 and raise his total compensation from $7.6million to $9.5m annually.

Tucker handed mega-deal

That figure equates roughly to the salary Michigan State committed to paying Mel Tucker when they handed him a 10-year, $95m contract last November.

Brian Kelly was in receipt of more or less the same compensation level when he left Notre Dame for LSU last year and Day's deal trails only reported figures for USC's Lincoln Riley and Alabama's Nick Saban.
